Karim
Panni is the modern day hiphop businessman. The Oakland, CA resident
always has something big he’s working on, whether it be for himself, the
artists he represents, a huge event like SXSW or CMJ, or his company
Quality Control Marketing.
“I guess I’ve done about everything
you can do in the game…Radio host, DJ, Emcee, Concert Promoter, Club
Host, Journalist, Producer, Record Label VP, Management, Beat Broker,
Blogger, Tour Booking, Built from Skratch TV show creator, record label
owner of MYX Music Label, Business Development for MYX, and now Owner of
my own company Quality Control Marketing LLC, and co-owner of a
concert/event promotions company called The Candlestick Kids..”
Karim
was born and raised in the Bay Area, until 1997 when he moved to the
NW. He started promoting hiphop shows with the likes of Hieroglyphics,
Latyrx, the Roots and more, when he joined hiphop supergroup Oldominion.
Along with fellow Oldominion members Onry Ozzborn and JFK (Grayskul),
Sleep, Pale Soul, Snafu, Sirens Echo, Mr. Hill etc. the crew created a
dark and aggressive NW sound and became the first artists from the
region to tour the US and Canada extensively. From there, N. Lang and
his partner Destro and world renowned DJ, DJ Scene formed the golden era
hiphop crew Boom Bap Project in Seattle. The crew released the
critically acclaimed self released (Stuck Under the Needle/Fat Beats)
project “Circumstance Dictates” in 2001. The trio ended up touring the
US and the world, and finally signed to indie hiphop record label
powerhouse Rhymesayers Ent. “Getting with the Rhymesayers family was the
best thing that could’ve ever happened to us. Hands down we’ve got the
best label in the game!”
After signing to Rhymesayers in 2004,
Nightclubber Lang and his crew hit the road hard and spread the gospel
that was their 2005 release “Reprogram.” Establishing close friendships
and alliances with super producers Jake One (50 Cent, De La Soul,
Freeway, M.O.P.)Vitamin D (Young Buck, Redman, Gift of Gab) the crew
helped spread the Seattle sound to the rest of the galaxy.
2007
brought more touring and the opportunity for Karim to expand his
horizons and move into television and label ownership. “We were on tour
with Brother Ali in Texas and I got a call about a job back in the Bay
with an upstart Asian American Television Network. They needed someone
with the know how and connections to help with Business Development and
Events, and to run a brand new, network backed record label called MYX
Music Label.”
After releases from Keelay and Zaire, Jern Eye,
Kam Moye aka Supastition, D.Black, and more, Karim moved on from MYX
Music Label in early 2010 to start his own marketing and publicity
company, Quality Control Marketing. Aligning himself with a few other
indie hiphop/music heavy hitters, QC* clients include Red Bull, Exile,
Foreign Legion, Crown Royale, Grillade and more. The first order of
business for 2010 was Red Bull Emsee, Red Bull King of the Rock, Red
Bull Big Tune, and Official Quality Control Marketing Showcases at the
A3C Hiphop Festival in Atlanta, CMJ in NYC, and SXSW 2011 in Austin, TX.
Tons of exciting things on the horizon as Karim and QC* move forward in
2011 and beyond. Stay tuned!
